Stepping Off
to College

Stepping Off to College is Helping Hands for Youth’s signature initiative designed to set high school seniors up for success as they take their next big step. Through a series of practical, engaging workshops, we cover everything students need to know as they prepare for college life—whether they’re heading across the country or staying close to home.
Our sessions go beyond just filling out applications and choosing majors. We dive into real-world topics like managing your time and money, understanding campus resources, and building effective study habits. We also explore career preparation, helping students think about internships, networking, and the skills today’s employers value most. The goal is simple: to give every senior the confidence and know-how to thrive, not just survive, as they transition into college and beyond.
Stepping Off to College is all about making sure students feel ready, supported, and excited for what comes next. Because when they know what to expect, they’re free to focus on what really matters—discovering their potential and shaping their own futures.

Students learn about:

  • College life
  • Financial management
  • Computer management
  • Time management
  • Health management
  • Public speaking
  • Business etiquette and much more…

In addition, students learn about scholarship opportunities that can further develop their college and professional network.

Mapping Your Future

Mapping Your Future

This program is all about giving students the tools they need to think for themselves—and think well. The focus isn’t just on getting good grades or picking the “right” path. Instead, the program teaches kids how to weigh their options, question assumptions, and look at problems from different angles. Through hands-on activities, real-world scenarios, and group discussions, students practice making decisions in situations that feel relevant to their lives, whether it’s about school, friendships, or planning ahead. The goal is to build up their confidence and independence, so that when they face tough choices—big or small—they’re ready to ask the right questions, consider the consequences, and trust their own reasoning. By sharpening these critical thinking skills, “Mapping Your Future” helps students navigate school and life with a little more clarity and a lot more confidence.
